State 4 Horse Knowledge & Riding Open to all members of the BHS who have reached the age of 18 years. Stage 4 Horse Knowledge & Care is open to those who have reached the age of 19 years.
Prerequisites:
- Horse Knowledge and Riding Stage 3
Candidates may not take this examination at a Center at which he/she has been training or working in any capacity for any period during the four weeks prior to the examination.
The Riding and Care sections may be taken as separate tests.
Prerequisites:
- Horse Knowledge and Care Stage 3 for Care section
- Riding Stage 3 for Riding Section
Candidates applying for the Intermediate Teaching Test are required to submit a current Health & Safety First Aid at Work Certificate. The Exam Office will forward the BHSII certificate once the Stage 4 and I.T. certificates have been passed.
Requirements - The candidate must be capable of taking sole charge of a group of horses of various types in stables and at grass. He/she must be an educated rider capable of training and improving horses in their work on the flat, over fences and on the lunge.

| HORSE KNOWLEDGE AND CARE |
All the work required for Stage 3 should be carried out to an even higher standard of efficiency. In addition, candidates will be expected to show knowledge and practical ability in the following subjects:
- General - An increase of responsibility and organization in the yard, showing a deeper knowledge and understanding of all the subjects previously covered coupled with an ability to give clear explanations of their reasons for actions and methods chosen.
- Signs and seats of injury causing lameness.
- Ability to administer/apply treatment prescribed by the Veterinary Surgeon and supply relevant information to assist diagnosis.
- Knowledge of developing and maintaining the horse's condition and fitness and of monitoring the same for work to Elementary Dressage, Novice Horse Trials, Newcomers Show Jumping and Endurance Riding (up to 80km/50 miles).
- Management and General Handling - Confirmation and development of the work started in Stage 3. In addition:
- Management of grassland and of horses and ponies kept at grass.
- Simple work programmes for yard workers and for horses.
- The planning of facilities, their construction, maintenance and safety rules.
- Knowledge of the care of brood mares, of young stock, of sick horses and of those with special needs.
- Communications - Show an awareness of the value of good communication and public relations and the ability to work with others in a position of authority. Show a responsible attitude and an understanding of problems which may arise in daily yard work.
Understand how to collect and collate information; interpret instructions; understand problems; impart information; build and sustain good working relations with other people.
- General Knowledge - Third Party Public Liability Insurance, personal accident cover, accident reports, straying animals, etc. Knowledge of the B.H.S. and its Departments and Regional Structure. Knowledge of the B.H.S. Register of Instructors.

| RIDING |
Candidates who are considered to be below the standard may be asked to retire (leave the examination).
- Ability to ride and improve horses both on the flat and over fences effectively, with style, and equestrian tact. Assessing horse's conformation, performance, present standard and problems, and the type of work for which they are best suited. Ability to ride and train horses for Elementary Dressage tests, Novice Horse Trials and Newcomers' Show Jumping competitions.
- Show correct thinking and riding when working horses in a snaffie or a double bridle. The train/riding of walk pirouette and the school work required for Horse Knowledge and Riding Stage 3.
- Correct influences and smooth application of the aids with a clear understanding of the reasons for them.
- Safety aspects when riding over a varied terrain and fixed fences. Ability to assess and work a horse on the lunge. Knowledge of training the riding horse from his early days as a foal, until he is ready to compete at the levels listed above.
