Open to all members of the BHS who have reached the age of 17 years. Candidates are required to hold four G.C.S.E. subjects at Grade A, B, or C (or their equivalents) one of which must be English language or English literature. Candidates who have reached the age of 18 years will be allowed exemption from this academic qualification.
Prerequisites:
Candidates must show that they have the required qualities and can apply the basic principles of teaching, e.g., manner, voice, control, etc. and that they have the ability to improve their pupil's horsemanship and horsemastership using a progressive plan.
They must know the safety procedures and principles involved in the organization of a lesson or hack (in the open country or on roads).
They must have a knowledge of how to proceed should there be an accident or an emergency, and have sound knowledge of road safety.
Candidates will be examined on their ability to:
- Take a class lesson of 3 or 4 pupils of up to Stage 2 level, working toward Stage 3. Assess the pupils and give a constructive class lesson on the flat and using ground poles or jumps.
- Show a sound knowledge of basic equitation and be able to give clear explanations of lesson subjects and teaching format for the standard indicated in number 1 above.
- Give a leading rein or lunge lesson suitable for a beginner or novice rider. Either lesson may be to an Adult or Child.
- Give oral/practical, stable management lectures of up to 5 minutes suitable for H.K.C. Stage 2, S/NVQ Level 2, Riding Club Grade/Phase 2 or Pony Club C Test standard candidates.
- Show knowledge of basic organizatlon of a commercial establishment. Answer questions on safety and accident procedures.

N.B. Candidates may be required to give these lessons in the open and/or in a covered school. Ground poles, cavalletti or small jumps will be incorporated in the class lessons (item number 1 above).
Candidates who fail the questions on accident procedure, but pass the rest of the Test, will be required to produce a valid First Aid Certificate (minimum 4hr Emergency), to be sent in to the Examinations Office before their result is confirmed. |
