Open to all members of the BHS who have passed the BHS Assistant Instructor's Examination and have reached the age of 20 years.
Prerequisites:
- Assistant Instructor's Certificate
- Health & Safety First Aid at Work Certificate
Candidates may not take this examination at a Center at which he/she has been training or working in any capacity for any period during the four weeks prior to the examination.
All Intermediate Teaching Application Forms must be accompanied by a current Health & Safety First Aid at Work Certificate. Candidates passing the IT and Stage 4 Horse Knowledge & Riding will automatically be awarded the BHSII Certificate.
Candidates will be expected to:
- Take a class lesson showing the ability to give an interesting and stimulating lesson on the flat OR building up a line of fences (grid). (Candidates will be advised on the day whether they are to teach the class on the flat or jumping).
- Teach on the flat. Assess the horse and rider and work to achieve and improve correct basic gaits. Show knowledge of the work in Elementary Dressage and use appropriate exercises to help improve and establish correct work.
- Teach over fences - show jumps and/or cross country. Assess the horse and rider and work to improve performance. Be able to give practical help with riding courses for competitions. (Newcomers/Novice Horse Trials) and offer advice for work at home.
- Give a lunge lesson to a rider of up to Stage 3 standard to improve position and effectiveness. Show knowledge of working a horse on the lunge with satisfactory technique.
- Equitation Theory and Lectures. Discuss training techniques, lesson content, teaching problems and the preparation of horses and riders for competitions: Elementary Dressage; Newcomers Show Jumping and BHS Novice Horse Trials. Also the value of lungeing on the flat and over fences, suitable lungeing equipment and lungeing areas. Give a 5 minute lecture on a given subject suitable for Stage 3/Preliminary Teaching Test students.
- Business and Yard Management. Discuss Yard Organization, Stable Work, Training for the Riding & Road Safety Test, Office Management and Organisation of Rides.
